Your Frazzled English Woman

The leaves are starting to burn and the sky is getting darker – you know what that means: it’s Autumn. The seasons are shifting, and so are you. Many changes may come with that, and that could include your aesthetic. Fancy sprucing up your wardrobe and hobbies? During this time of year, I’d recommend looking into the frazzled English woman aesthetic. Not only is it quite easy to achieve, but it also helps to romanticise what some might find a rather depressing time of year.
But what is a frazzled English woman? And how do you become one?
These types of people are often described as messy, not put together, and always in a rush. They are seen as imperfect, yet somehow both inspiring and relatable – whether that’s because of their drinking or smoking habits, or maybe even their tardiness. You can find them wearing chunky knitted jumpers, throwing on the nearest pair of tights (that probably have ladders in), pulling their hair into a messy updo, and wrapping a scarf around them as they go on their merry way. Or they’ll be snuggled up in their pyjamas, binging their favourite romcom for the 500th time.
Essentially, this person is not composed, just like many of us. People find comfort in this aesthetic because it doesn’t push them to be organised all the time, but rather encourages them to just be themselves.
Need inspiration? Think of idols such as Bridget Jones, or characters played by Kate Winslet and Keira Knightley.
If this is the aesthetic for you, be prepared to spend very little money at all! It’s more than likely that you’ll be able to pull these simple items out of the back of your wardrobe in no time. As I mentioned earlier, you can’t go wrong with a pair of slightly laddered tights, which just so happen to go with any boots you own, whether high-heeled or Docs. A candle or two is also a cost-effective way of not only making your room smell nice but also making it look cosy – and they’re often quite cheap (or maybe your great aunt sent one to you for your birthday that you never used – well, now’s a great time!).
You can never go wrong with a pair of mismatched fluffy socks for those casual nights in when you just want to eat takeout and watch TV. But don’t forget your glasses – we can’t have you going blind! And of course, there’s your abnormally large leather bag that fits everything and anything you might need to grab and go – or even a bag that resembles an old school satchel.
Who would’ve known that a cosy sweater and a candle could really make such a difference?
This person is effortlessly chic and always leaves things to the last minute.
Recently, on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, this aesthetic has become a popular trend during the autumn and winter months. There could be many reasons for this, but I like to think it’s girls coming together to uplift each other – despite how different we all are. The colder, darker months can be scary and stressful, and this trend is a great way to make the season feel more comforting.
It’s also the season for exploring new possibilities and trying new things – like layering (which may seem like a very small change, but it’s actually quite fun!). Most importantly, be kind to those who struggle during these next few months, and be kind to yourself. Use this season as an excuse to be messy and a little less put together. The world could use more people like this.
