Femininity is a broad term with various elements to its meaning. By definition, it is a complex concept referring to a set of attributes, behaviours, and roles traditionally associated with women. While it is often linked to biological sex, it’s important to note that both masculinity and femininity can be expressed by all genders, as these are social constructs shaped by behavioural patterns throughout history.
Nevertheless, I think it’s interesting to note how women over the years have used the social construct of femininity to their advantage. Many female icons have harnessed their feminine attributes in the pursuit of their careers. For example, Marilyn Monroe was considered incredibly alluring not only because of her appearance but also because of her personality. She was described as kind and sensitive, yet also intelligent and charismatic. She embraced femininity while remaining a unique and individual person.
In addition to this, it’s important to acknowledge that while femininity has, at times, been used to ascend socially or professionally, it has also contributed to the creation of incredibly high standards for women. Unfortunately, in recent years, these standards have become increasingly unrealistic due to the rise of social media and online influence. Women are now expected not only to look a certain way but also to behave in specific ways. It’s often unclear whether an image has been edited or whether someone has undergone cosmetic procedures, which misleads many people. There are so many factors at play that make it difficult—not only for women but for everyone—to embrace who they truly are. It’s a dangerous slope, and the younger generation is suffering the most.
It’s hard to keep up with societal expectations for one simple reason: they’re not realistic. Human beings are not designed to perform at their best all the time—we have faults, and that’s part of human nature.
There is an art to performing and to embracing elaborate social constructs. Yet, I believe that as a society, we must remember that we are all people with uniquely different lives, strengths, and weaknesses. It’s important to stay true to yourself and embrace your femininity in a way that feels authentic to you.
