Signature style is an intangible concept that is deeply intertwined with one’s soul. Successful external expression can offer a myriad of clues about your inner world, but this requires deep self-reflection. Dressing in accordance with your soul may sound daunting yet true signature style is natural and inimitable.

In a suffocating era of fleeting trends and performative expression, we are submerged in a sea of passionless dressers. The absence of individuality is increasingly apparent and, quite frankly, disheartening. While such discussions may seem trivial to some, those who truly value the art of dressing will understand.

Crafting a magnetic image is a deeply personal process. True magnetism does not come from generic sources but is built upon a foundation of interests, experiences and emotions. Start by identifying and compiling your inspirations. What moves you? What fascinates you? This kind of introspection will ignite your multifaceted style journey.

Personally, I have always viewed dressing as an art form and have developed meaningful connections with the pieces in my collection. I recognise that each connection has been shaped by genuine fascinations, stories and interests. These relationships inspire exciting outfit developments as everything aligns through thoughtful observation. For example, every unusual ring on my armoured hands serves as a memory, allowing my experiences to permeate my style, while my obsession with the avant-garde has led to many obscure discoveries.

Some of my favourite people with an unbreakable image include Daphne Guinness, Karl Lagerfeld and Dita Von Teese. If you study each of these figures, you will notice how their interests have infiltrated their personal style.

If you already possess a sense of self but struggle to conceptualise an authentic signature style, here are some starting points to guide you:

Inspiration Compilation

Translate your thoughts into something tangible. Your mind is likely brimming with inspiration, but without reflection these ideas may remain buried. Create a moodboard filled with everything that truly resonates with you. Consider your attraction to fashion history, runway archives, cultural influences and personal experiences. The messier the better; aim for an unfiltered collection of visuals that capture what genuinely moves you.

Pinpointing Common Elements

Once your moodboard is complete, draw parallels and identify recurring themes. This will allow you to understand your attractions on a deeper level. Are certain shapes or textures appearing repeatedly? Ask yourself why. Delving into the whys is essential in shaping your signature style and forces you to connect the dots within.

Wardrobe Curation

Examine your current wardrobe critically. Identify the pieces that align with your realised style (they exist, I promise) and separate them from the rest. Anything that fails to inspire you should not interfere. Next, identify the gaps and gradually fill them. With time and patience, you can transform your wardrobe into a true reflection of yourself. Experimenting with second-hand pieces can further cement your signature style, allowing you to find distinctive items that fit your vision.

Although signature style may seem elusive, deciphering your inner self is a lifelong quest that is constantly evolving. Once you allow yourself to tune into your deepest thoughts and instincts, the mystery begins to unravel.
