A bath is more than just a means to wash our bodies. It is something far more complex; an intimate, restorative ritual for the body and mind. Water and bathing has long been tied to femininity and rejuvenation – cast your mind back to the birth of Venus. Thus, you can consider this a foundational course in building your perfect bath that will leave you feeling like a goddess in your own right.
The first - and most essential - step is understanding why you are about to turn the faucet on. A bath serves a similar purpose to a shower, so why choose the former?
This level of introspection may sound excessive, but intention moulds experience. Understanding what you crave in that moment guides you to create an atmosphere that your body responds to. Ask yourself, do you crave rejuvenation, relaxation, or restoration? Allow your answer to guide you.
Now, you are ready to choose your base product – bubble bath, oil, botanical tea bags, salt etc. Overwhelmed by the endless options? Unruffle your feathers and allow practicality to assuage you. Is your skin prone to clogging? Opt for lighter oils, or a floral tea bag. Sensitive skin? Reach for fragrance free options like oat based milks. Muscle pain? Salts are the holy grail. Low energy? Avoid heavy oils and loose florals and your serenity will remain intact.
Now, let us consider fragrance — the most romantic element of bath time design. Aroma should not be reduced to a beautiful smell; it is a silent siren, seducing our nervous system to subtly shift our mood. While your base product may provide a suitable perfume, you may elect for a more bespoke approach by introducing a concoction of diluted essential oils to an unscented base. If that doesn’t resonate, layering fragrance through lotions and soaps is entirely felicitous.
The combinations are limitless, so encourage your inner alchemist to frolic free! However, some combinations are classic for a reason – Lavender and chamomile promote relaxation, while rose and jasmine nurture a bouquet of indulgence, sensuality, and quiet energy. Blending these reliable scents can refine the experience. The key here is not complexity, but alignment. Choose scents that reflect your intention.
Lighting is a powerful tool to upgrade your bath. Bright overhead lights are harsh and clinical, while natural sunlight or candlelight envelopes you in a realm of serenity. As an extra tip, select wax candle colours that align with your chosen mood.
Sound is crucial too. Some prefer the rare opportunity for silence, where the rhythm of the water and echo of their breathing is enough. Others (like me), prefer music or ambient sound to quiet their thoughts. My approach is to treat my bath like a film scene. What would be playing to evoke your desired mood?
Now, all that remains is to soak. Feel your body settle, your breath slow, your shoulders fall, and simply exist. A bath is one of those rare moments in modern life where we are given permission to pause. So, to maximise comfort, purchase a bath pillow and surround yourself with objects and trinkets that connect with your intention. Simply romanticise your composition.
When you step out, legs aglow and dripping in bubbles, I hope that you experience a quiet shift: a sensation of lightness, of contentment, a slower pace of mind.
In being mindful of your choices, you can transform a simple act into something remarkably restorative. The indulgence is entirely the point - you are worthy of frivolity! But most importantly, you are worthy of care. And that, more than anything, is what makes a perfect bath.
